 A downstem is a long tubular piece of glass using which you can connect your bowl piece to the main water chamber of your bong. It creates an airtight seal between the glass pieces and facilitates suction pressure that you need when you have to pull the smoke from your bowl piece down into the water chamber while inhaling.
